Headline Details: The first Guatemalan CubeSat “QUETZAL-1” main goal is to contribute in the educational field in Guatemala, motivating and educating citizens, specially children, young people and the local Amateur Radio Club ( Club de Radioaficionados de Guatemala - CRAG) members, through the development, launch into space and communications with a 1U CubeSat. The satellite is being developed and built in Universidad del Valle de Guatemala (UVG), with the participation of undergraduate students, alumni and professors with the collaboration and support of different institutions such as CRAG, Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones de Guatemala (SIT), Prensa Libre (the newspaper with more audience in Guatemala), schools and different sponsors and international organizations. QUETZAL-1 mission objective is to integrate different systems that make up a CubeSat. This to develop in Guatemala the skills required for the operation of satellites. The satellite will send telemetry, mostly its health status, to the amateur radio community worldwide. It also includes a camera that will take pictures of the Earth, this images will be sended to UVG’s Ground Control Station (GCS). Also, an APRS transmitter will be installed at UVG’s GCS; this transmitter will be used to send the health status data of the QUETZAL-1 to the local amateur radio community in Guatemala. Proposing a high speed GFSK downlink on UHF. Planning a JAX deployment from the ISS. A downlink on 437.200 MHz has been coordinated.
